DIY Shower Melts for Congestion (Clean Ingredients Only)

Let’s unclog your face.

Shower melts are wildly underrated. Being stuffed up is torture. You can’t breathe, you can’t sleep, and every inhale sounds like you’re trying to suck air through a coffee stirrer. These little buggers actually help. Toss one in the shower and suddenly you’re breathing like a functioning human again — so well you might just stand there until the water runs cold. Honestly? Go for it. You probably earned the break.

The Quick Breakdown

Shower melts (also called shower steamers) are small tablets that fizz and release essential oils when warm water hits them. They work kind of like bath bombs—just made for the shower instead.

As they dissolve, they release the essential oil blend you choose. For this recipe, that’s eucalyptus, peppermint, and a little lemon to brighten things up. The steam carries the oils into the air, helping open your sinuses, ease congestion, and make breathing noticeably easier.

What You’ll Need
  • 1 cup baking soda (cleans, deodorizes, helps the melt harden)
  • 2–3 tablespoons water (just enough to form a thick paste)

Optional:

  • 10 drops lemon oil

Equipment

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spoon/Silicone Spatula
  • Silicone molds (ice cube tray, mini muffin mold, or similar)

Ingredients

  • 1 C Baking soda
  • ½ C Arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • 2-3 tbsp Water as needed
  • 20-30 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10-15 drops Peppermint essential oil

Optional

  • 5-10 drops Lemon essential oil

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, stir together the baking soda and arrowroot powder (or cornstarch) until smooth.
  • Start with 1 tablespoon of water. Add small amounts at a time until the mixture feels like wet sand—firm enough to hold together when pressed but not runny.
  • Mix in your eucalyptus and peppermint oils (and optional lemon). Stir very well so the scent is evenly distributed.
  • Pack the mixture tightly into silicone molds. Firm compression helps prevent crumbling once dry.
  • Let the melts sit overnight on the counter, or for 4–5 hours in a warm, dry room.Once hardened, pop them out and store in a sealed glass jar.

Notes

Store in a sealed glass jar and keep away from humidity to prevent crumbling.

How to Make These Shower Melts

The process is stupidly simple — mix, press, dry, done. Here’s the quick rundown:

Mix the dry stuff:
Combine baking soda + arrowroot/cornstarch in a bowl.

Add water slowly:
Just enough to get a wet-sand texture that holds together when you squeeze it.
(If it forms a sloppy paste, you added too much.)

Add your oils:
Eucalyptus, peppermint, and lemon if you want the extra brightness. Mix really well.

Press into molds:
Pack it tight so your melts don’t crumble later.

Dry completely:
Overnight on the counter or a few hours in a warm room.
Then pop them out and store them in a glass jar.

That’s it — five steps to a homemade decongestant that actually works.

The Right Way to Melt Your Misery Away

Place one melt on the floor of your shower, just outside the direct water stream so it doesn’t dissolve instantly. As the warm water hits it, it slowly fizzes and releases the essential oils into the steam — opening your sinuses and helping you breathe like a functional human again.

Use them anytime you’re dealing with:

    • congestion
    • sinus pressure
    • colds or flu
    • allergy flare-ups
    • that rude morning brain fog

And that’s it — simple, clean, and actually effective. Make a batch now so the next time you’re stuffed up and miserable, you’ve got a little lifesaver waiting in a jar.
