DIY Bath Paint (Clean, Kid-Safe & Perfect for Bedtime)

Bath time is hands-down my kids’ favorite part of the day. The second the water starts running, they’re all in — and when bath paint is involved, it turns into full-on creative play instead of the usual rush to get washed and out.
What I love most is that bath time becomes a calm reset before bed. While they’re painting and relaxing, I can work in magnesium to help their little bodies unwind and support better sleep. It’s fun for them and functional for me — which is always a win.

Why Bath Paint Is a Bedtime Win
Bath paint slows everything down in the best way. It keeps little hands busy, encourages creativity, and helps shift the energy from daytime chaos to nighttime calm.
When kids are relaxed and enjoying themselves, they’re happy to stay in the bath a bit longer — which makes it the perfect time to add magnesium flakes to the water. Warm water plus magnesium equals a smoother transition into bedtime and fewer battles once the lights go out.

Notes
DIY Bath Paint Recipe
This recipe gives you true tempura-style paint consistency — thick enough to actually paint with, but still easy to rinse clean.
Ingredients
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1½–2 cups water
1½ cups = thicker paint
2 cups = classic tempura paint feel
- Food coloring
About 3 drops per color
(I use Watkins food coloring)
- Tablespoon liquid soap
This is the soap I use and trust for bath paint.
How to Make It
1. Add the cornstarch and water to a saucepan and whisk until smooth.
2. Heat over medium, stirring constantly.
3. After a few minutes, the mixture will thicken into a creamy, paint-like texture.
4. Remove from heat and whisk in soap.
5. Divide into small containers and add food coloring.
6. Stir well and hand over the paintbrushes.
Messy Hands, Zero Stress Cleanup
This isn’t a “paint nicely with a tiny brush” situation. My kids dip their whole hands in and go to town — and that’s kind of the point. We use paintbrushes, sponges, fingers, palms… whatever they grab first.
You can also get creative and use toys as stamps — cups, bath letters, blocks, even little animals — and see what fun shapes and patterns show up. It turns bath time into playtime without me stressing about stains or residue.
The thicker texture is key. It stays where they put it instead of turning the tub into a slippery disaster, and it rinses clean off tubs, tile, and skin with warm water. If it thickens too much as it cools, just add a splash of warm water and give it a quick whisk — back in business.
